Window Box

window box

A window box is very easy to make out of old floorboards. If you cannot obtain floorboards you can use exterior grade plywood.

If it is to fit on a windowsill you will have to adjust the measurements accordingly.

Cut 2 pieces of board of equal lengths for the front and back and 2 pieces of equal length for the sides. Cut a further length for the base.

Nail the front and back pieces to the sides using galvanised nails, ensuring that the edges are flush. Fasten the base to the assembled sides.

Drill a few ½" holes in the base to provide drainage.

If the box is to be free standing, cut 2 pieces of 1" x 1" timber and fasten to the base to keep the box off the floor and allow excess water to drain out.

Join the pieces together using galvanised nails so that they do not rust and treat with a wood preservative. There are coloured preservatives made for fences that can be used if you prefer to have the box a different colour.
