Garlic

(Allium sativum)

A member of the onion family that grows to 1ft (30cm).Grow in well manured ground in a sunny, well drained position. Plant individual cloves in the autumn to overwinter. They can be planted in the spring but the autumn sown ones will give stronger healthier bulbs. Lift the plants and dry the bulbs in late summer or autumn. A few cloves can be replanted for continued supplies the following year.

Gasplant

(Dictamnus albus)

A bushy perennial that grows to 2ft (60cm). It has dark green shiny leaves and long spikes of delicate white flowers. It will grow in partial shade but prefers a sunny well-drained position. Sow seeds in spring.

Uses

The plant is grown for its ornamental value. Its leaves are lemon scented and in hot dry weather they give off an oily vapour. This vapour is flammable and will burst into flame if ignited with a flame.
